Liver Meridian — the 14 points

    Liver
The Liver is in Chinese medicine the guarantor of the free circulation of Qi throughout the body. This unique function explains the breadth of its influence: mood, digestion, menstrual cycle and suppleness of the tendons all depend on it. When it is obstructed, irritability, tension, sighing and premenstrual syndrome appear. Its fourteen points are among the most used in practice. Its time slot, between one and three in the morning, is when Blood returns to the Liver: regularly waking at that hour is a classic sign of its disturbance.

    Meridian pathway

The meridian begins at the outer nail corner of the big toe, travels up the dorsum of the foot, passes in front of the medial malleolus and follows the inner aspect of the leg. It crosses the Spleen meridian four finger-widths above the malleolus, continues up the inner thigh, curves around the genitals and enters the lower abdomen. It reaches the liver and gallbladder, crosses the diaphragm and ends below the nipple, in the sixth intercostal space. An internal branch rises to the throat, the eye and the vertex.

    Functions

The Liver ensures the free flow of Qi: it regulates the movement of energy in every direction, a condition of emotional balance and sound digestion. It stores Blood and releases it on exertion, which links its state to the abundance and regularity of menstruation. It governs the tendons and manifests in the nails. It opens into the eyes, hence its role in blurred vision and ocular dryness. Suppressed anger is the emotion that injures it.
