    Waiguan — Outer Pass

    In brief

This point is useful for relieving several common discomforts, such as headaches, fever, or arm and shoulder pain. It is particularly helpful for support with colds or tinnitus.

    Where to find it

On the back of the forearm, above the wrist crease, between the radius and ulna bones

    How to stimulate it (acupressure)

To stimulate this point, place your thumb or another finger on the back of the forearm, about two fingerbreadths above the wrist crease, between the two forearm bones. Apply moderate pressure, not too firm, and massage with small circular movements. A sensation of mild warmth or numbness is normal, but it should never be painful. Maintain the pressure or massage for one to two minutes. You can repeat this stimulation two to three times a day, or whenever you feel the need.

    For practitioners

    Other uses

    Acupuncture

    Depth : 0.5-1 cun

Needling at this point is performed perpendicularly by a qualified practitioner, at a depth generally varying between 0.5 and 1 cun. This procedure must be carried out with precision and in compliance with strict hygiene rules.

    Moxibustion

Moxibustion can be applied to this point to warm and activate circulation. A practitioner will use heated mugwort to stimulate the area, without direct contact with the skin, and will adjust the duration according to the desired effect.

This Luo point of the Triple Burner is also an opening point of the Yang Wei Mai, giving it a particular action on the body's surface and the dispersal of external pathogenic factors.

Effects in traditional Chinese energetics (TCM)

This point dispels Wind-Heat (clears symptoms associated with external influences such as cold or heat), benefits the ears (improves hearing function), promotes the flow of Qi (vital energy) through the meridian (the energy pathway), and is a Master point of the Yang Wei Mai (an extraordinary vessel that regulates the exterior of the body) and a Luo point (an important connecting point between meridians).
