Tiaokou — Valley Mouth
In brief
Point E38 is useful for relieving pain in the legs and around the shoulder. Massaging it may help improve your comfort and mobility, particularly if you experience tension or stiffness.
Where to find it
Front outer side of the lower leg, below E35, below E37.
How to stimulate it (acupressure)
Apply gentle to moderate pressure with your thumb or index finger. You should feel a sensation of pressure, sometimes slight numbness, but never sharp pain. Maintain the pressure for 1 to 2 minutes per leg, using small circular movements or alternating pressure and release. You can repeat this stimulation 2 to 3 times a day.
Other uses
Acupuncture
Depth : 1-1.5 cun
The acupuncturist can insert a fine sterile needle perpendicular to the skin to stimulate this point. The insertion depth is generally 1 to 1.5 cun (approximately 2.5 to 4 cm). This procedure, performed in a clinic, must always be carried out by a qualified practitioner.
Moxibustion
Moxibustion, which consists of applying heat using a glowing mugwort source near the E38 point, may be used by a practitioner. The typical duration for this application is 10 to 20 minutes, and it is always performed with caution to avoid burns.
Effects in traditional Chinese energetics (TCM)
This point promotes the flow of Qi (vital energy) through the Stomach meridian (energy channel) and specifically addresses the shoulder as a distal point (located away from the area being treated).
