That shooting pain that starts in the lower back and travels down the leg, the difficulty of sitting for more than 20 minutes, those nights when every position becomes uncomfortable... If you suffer from sciatica, you know how much it can turn the simplest movements into real ordeals!
The good news is that Chinese medicine offers concrete solutions. My approach at the practice combines acupuncture and cupping, and it yields quite satisfying results. Many patients regain comfortable mobility in just a few sessions, even after months of pain.
Understanding What's Happening in Your Body
What's really going on? The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the body: imagine a cable that runs from the base of your spine, through your buttocks, and all the way down your leg to your foot…
When this nerve is irritated or compressed, the entire area suffers!
Where Does This Compression Come From?
Sometimes, it's a herniated disc: the small cushion between your vertebrae has shifted and is pressing on the nerve.
Other times, it's your deep muscles (especially the piriformis, a small muscle in the buttock) that have become so tight they are literally pinching the nerve as it passes through.
It can also be inflammation following an awkward movement, poor posture held for too long at your desk, or simply natural wear and tear over time.
The pain you feel can be shooting, dull, burning, or accompanied by tingling... Every case of sciatica tells a different story.
What Chinese Medicine Observes
In Chinese medicine, we observe a blockage of energy (Qi) and blood in the meridians that run through your back and leg. It's as if the energy circulation has slowed down and become congested.
This blockage can stem from several factors:
- Cold and Dampness settling in your joints; you may have noticed that the pain often worsens in damp weather.
- Stress also plays a major role. In Chinese medicine, it creates a stagnation of Liver Qi, which manifests as muscle tension in the back.
- Finally, when your overall energy is weak (chronic fatigue, overwork), your lower back becomes more vulnerable.
The goal of the treatment? To restore circulation, warm and deeply relax the area, and strengthen energy where it's lacking.
What If the Body Is Expressing Something?
Here's some food for thought... Sciatica follows the precise path of the Bladder meridian—the very one we work on during a session. On an energetic level, this meridian is associated with letting go of old memories and the ability to release old patterns. It can be seen as a fear of change: a difficulty in giving up old habits, beliefs, or lifestyles whose comfort seemed sufficient. Sciatica often occurs during life transitions, periods of overwhelming responsibility, or intense stress—as if the body is expressing through pain what the mind is struggling to manage. Sometimes, putting words to what the body is expressing can be part of the path to healing.
The Approach at the Practice: Cupping and Acupuncture
It's with this combination that I observe the best results…
1. Cupping: The Long-Awaited Release
I generally start with cupping on the lower back. The suction created draws blood to the surface, and the effect is quite remarkable: the cups release contracted muscles and improve local circulation. Many people feel almost immediate relief, as if the area is finally "unraveling."
The cups are then placed along the spine, on points of the Bladder meridian, where tension is often at its peak. Sometimes I leave them fixed for a few minutes; other times, I slide them gently to massage the entire lumbar area deeply.
2. Acupuncture: Precision and a Global Approach
Next comes acupuncture. Two complementary levels are treated:
- Local points. Directly where the pain manifests: on your lower back and in the buttock (using a very well-known and particularly effective point for releasing the sciatic nerve). This is often where the nerve is compressed by the piriformis muscle.
- Distal points: on your leg, your calf, sometimes even your foot. This is the subtlety of Chinese medicine! These points act on the entire meridian pathway and enhance the pain-relieving effect in a holistic way.
3. Treating the Body as a Whole
Sciatica is never an isolated issue. When you come to the practice, I always look beyond the painful area: your posture, your hamstrings, the balance of your pelvis, your entire muscle chain. Because treating only the painful spot risks the pain returning. We need to rebalance the structure for the relief to be lasting… This is where massage and some manual adjustments come into play.
When to See a Practitioner? For How Long?
Results Depend on Your Situation
I'll be frank with you: there's no magic formula. It all depends on how long you've had sciatica.
If the pain is recent (less than 3 weeks), a significant improvement is usually observed within the first 2 or 3 sessions. So, a few sessions are often enough to regain true comfort.
However, if it's a more chronic issue, relief will be more gradual, and we would typically plan for 5 to 8 sessions, spaced further apart as you get better.
Everyone responds differently, which is why a personalized protocol is necessary.
When Should You Come See Me?
At the very first signs! This is truly my most important piece of advice. The sooner we act, the faster and more effective the treatment.
If you are already under medical care, please know that my work is complementary (your doctor remains your primary contact for diagnosis).
Many people also come after trying anti-inflammatory drugs, injections, or physical therapy without lasting results. If this is your case, don't be discouraged. The energetic approach can sometimes unblock situations that seemed to be at a standstill!
You don't have to live with sciatica. The combination of cupping and acupuncture allows us to treat both the root cause (the energy blockage and muscle tension) and the immediate symptom: the pain that hinders your daily life.
In my practice, every treatment is tailored: to the chronicity of your pain, your history, and your energetic constitution.
So don't wait for the pain to become too deeply ingrained—give yourself the chance to live pain-free!
