    Zhongfu — Central Palace

    In brief

The Central Palace point (P1) is often used to ease breathing difficulties such as coughing or shortness of breath, as well as pain in the chest and shoulder. It is a key point for feeling more comfortable when breathing feels difficult.

    Where to find it

In the 1st intercostal space, lateral to the midline, below the collarbone

    How to stimulate it (acupressure)

Apply gentle to moderate pressure with the tip of your thumb or index finger. Use small circular movements or steady pressure for 1 to 2 minutes. The sensation should be comfortable, like mild pressure or diffuse numbness, never sharp pain. You can repeat this self-massage 2 to 3 times a day, or more often when immediate relief is needed, always staying within your comfort level.

    For practitioners

    Other uses

    Acupuncture

    Depth : 0.3-0.5 cun oblique

The practitioner will insert fine needles at a precise depth and angle (lateral oblique), always being mindful of the proximity of the lungs to avoid any risk.

    Moxibustion

The practitioner may use the gentle heat of moxibustion (application of heated mugwort near the skin) to stimulate this point, particularly to strengthen Lung energy. This procedure is performed with caution to prevent any burns.

This point is very important for tonifying Lung energy (Qi) and helping calm upward surges of energy (rebellious Qi). It may be considered a first-aid point for shortness of breath.

Effects in traditional Chinese energetics (TCM)

This point helps disperse Lung heat (excess warm energy), regulate Lung Qi (vital energy) (balance the organ's function), and direct rebellious Qi downward (bring down energy that rises abnormally, as with coughing).
