    Zhongwan — Middle Granary

    In brief

This point is very effective for soothing a range of digestive discomforts and helping the abdomen feel more settled. It is particularly recommended for stomach pain, bloating, vomiting, or reflux.

    Where to find it

above the belly button (midway between belly button and sternum).

    How to stimulate it (acupressure)

To stimulate this point, place three fingers of your hand just above your navel. The point is located about four finger-widths above the navel, halfway between the navel and the sternum. Apply firm but comfortable pressure with the tip of your thumb or middle finger. The sensation should be pleasant, like gentle pressure or mild numbness, never sharp pain. Hold this pressure for 1 to 2 minutes. You can repeat this self-massage 2 to 3 times a day, particularly before or after meals, or whenever you experience digestive discomfort.

Needling at this point is performed perpendicularly, at a depth of 0.5 to 1.5 cun. This procedure must be performed only by a qualified practitioner.

    Moxibustion

Moxibustion (heat application) is very frequently used on this point to reinforce its action, particularly for chronic digestive disorders. This technique falls under the practitioner's remit for safe and effective application.

This point is a major point in the central epigastric region and is considered the Mu point of the Stomach, very important for digestive tonification.

Effects in traditional Chinese energetics (TCM)

This point harmonizes the Stomach (the organ associated with digestion), directs rebellious Qi downward (energy that rises against its normal flow, causing vomiting or reflux), and tonifies the Qi (vital energy) of the Middle Burner (the central digestive region). It is also the Mu point of the Stomach (an alarm and diagnostic point) and the Hui point (meeting point) of the Fu (the hollow organs).
