Shangwan — Upper Part of the Great
In brief
This point is useful for soothing digestive discomfort in the upper stomach area, such as acid reflux, nausea, or vomiting. It may also help calm the mind during episodes of restlessness or palpitations.
Where to find it
above the belly button.
How to stimulate it (acupressure)
To stimulate this point, locate it approximately five thumb-widths above your navel, on the midline of the abdomen. Apply gentle to moderate pressure with your fingertip, using small circular movements or sustained pressure. The sensation should be comfortable, perhaps with a slight heaviness or mild numbness, but never sharp pain. Massage for 1 to 2 minutes. You can repeat this self-massage 2 to 3 times a day, or whenever you feel the need.
Other uses
Acupuncture
Depth : 0.5-1 cun
The acupuncturist can insert a needle to a depth of 0.5 to 1 cun, perpendicularly to the skin. This procedure must be performed by a qualified professional in compliance with strict hygiene precautions.
Moxibustion
Moxibustion, a technique using heat from an herb warmed near the point, is often applied to this point to tonify and harmonize. It must be performed by a trained practitioner to avoid any risk of burns.
Effects in traditional Chinese energetics (TCM)
This point serves to harmonize the Stomach (the organ of digestion), direct rebellious Qi downward (energy that rises uncontrollably and causes reflux or vomiting), and regulate Shen (the mind, consciousness). It is also a meeting point with the Stomach meridian (stomach) and the Yin Wei Vessel (an energy vessel that links the Yin meridians).
