    Shenmai — Extending Vessel

    In brief

This point may help ease various discomforts, including headaches, dizziness, lower back pain, and insomnia. It is particularly known for its relaxing and rebalancing effects.

    Where to find it

Below the outer ankle bone, in the lower hollow

    How to stimulate it (acupressure)

To stimulate this point, find the depression just below the lateral malleolus (the prominent ankle bone on the outside of your ankle). Apply moderate pressure with your thumb or a finger, using small circular movements or direct pressure. The sensation should be comfortable, without sharp pain; mild numbness or warmth is common. Maintain pressure for 1 to 2 minutes on each side. You can repeat this stimulation 2 to 3 times a day, as needed.

The acupuncturist can insert a very fine needle at this point. The movement is precise and performed by a qualified practitioner, with a needling depth generally between 0.3 and 0.5 cun.

This point is traditionally considered an opening point of the Yang Qiao Mai, one of the Eight Extraordinary Vessels.

Effects in traditional Chinese energetics (TCM)

Traditionally, this point disperses Wind (external pathogenic factors), calms the mind (promotes mental tranquility), activates the Yang Qiao Mai (an energy vessel), and is considered a key point (major point) of the Yang Qiao Mai.
