    Shuitu — Water Prominence

    In brief

This point is useful for relieving throat discomfort and promoting a soothing sensation in this area. It may help ease unpleasant sensations in the throat, such as discomfort or a feeling of tightness.

    Where to find it

On the anterior border of the sternocleidomastoid muscle, halfway between E9 and E11.

    How to stimulate it (acupressure)

Apply gentle to moderate pressure with your fingertip. You should feel slight pressure, but never sharp pain. Maintain the pressure for one to two minutes, using small circular movements or steady pressure. You can repeat this stimulation two to three times a day, or whenever you feel the need. Never press firmly, and always listen to your body. If you are unsure or symptoms persist, it is important to consult a healthcare professional.

    For practitioners

    Other uses

    Acupuncture

    Depth : 0.3-0.5 cun

Needling this point by a qualified practitioner is generally performed perpendicularly at a depth of 0.3 to 0.5 cun. This procedure must be performed with caution to avoid major vascular structures.

Effects in traditional Chinese energetics (TCM)

This point acts to direct rebellious Qi downward (energy that rises against its normal flow, causing, for example, coughing or a feeling of throat tightness) and to benefit the throat (relieve local pain and discomfort).

    Contraindications

It is essential to avoid excessive pressure or deep needling at this site because of its proximity to sensitive structures such as the carotid artery. It is advisable to consult a healthcare professional if you are unsure or have a history of specific medical conditions affecting the neck.
