Yanglao — Old Man's Hearth
In brief
Point IG6, also called "Old Man's Hearth", is a valuable point for easing certain common discomforts. It may be helpful for eye strain or for soothing pain that radiates from the shoulder toward the arm and elbow.
Where to find it
Dorsal side of the forearm, in the radial depression of the ulna head, above the styloid process.
How to stimulate it (acupressure)
Apply moderate pressure with your thumb, using small circular movements. The sensation should be gentle pressure or mild numbness, never sharp pain. Massage for 1 to 2 minutes per arm, 2 to 3 times a day.
Other uses
Acupuncture
Depth : 0.3-0.5 cun
The acupuncturist may insert a fine needle to a depth of 0.3 to 0.5 cun, perpendicular to the skin. This procedure is part of professional practice and requires precise knowledge of anatomy and technique.
As a Xi-Cleft point, IG6 is particularly indicated for acute conditions along the meridian or for regulating Qi and Blood.
Effects in traditional Chinese energetics (TCM)
This point promotes the flow of Qi (vital energy) along the meridian (the energy pathway), nourishes the tendons (the connections between muscles and bones), and is a Xi-Cleft point (a point that helps manage acute imbalances along the meridian).
