Tianfu — Celestial Palace
In brief
This acupressure point, located on the upper arm, is traditionally used to help relieve certain respiratory discomforts such as coughing or mild asthma, as well as minor nosebleeds. It is a key point for soothing the airways.
Where to find it
Antero-lateral side of the arm, below the anterior axillary fold, on the radial border of the biceps
Indications
How to stimulate it (acupressure)
Apply moderate pressure with your thumb or a finger, using circular movements or steady pressure. The sensation should be firm but comfortable, without sharp pain. Maintain pressure for 1 to 2 minutes per point, on both sides. You can repeat this stimulation 2 to 3 times a day.
Other uses
Acupuncture
Depth : 0.3-0.5 cun
The acupuncturist will insert fine needles to a depth of 0.3 to 0.5 cun. This procedure must be performed by a qualified practitioner, paying attention to the proximity of the brachial artery.
Moxibustion
This point can also be stimulated by moxibustion, a technique that involves applying heat using a plant (mugwort). This treatment is generally performed by a practitioner to avoid any risk of burns.
This point is particularly recognized for its effectiveness in stopping Lung-related bleeding, such as nosebleeds (epistaxis) or coughing up blood (hemoptysis).
Effects in traditional Chinese energetics (TCM)
This point acts to direct Lung Qi (vital energy) downward and clear Lung heat (inflammation/fever).
Contraindications
Particular care should be taken when applying deep techniques at this location due to the presence of the brachial artery. For self-massage, make sure never to apply excessive or painful pressure.
