Shencang — Spirit Storehouse
In brief
This point may help relieve cough, asthma, and pain in the chest or between the ribs. It is useful when breathing is difficult or you feel discomfort in this area.
Where to find it
lateral to CV18, in the 2nd intercostal space.
Indications
How to stimulate it (acupressure)
Apply gentle to moderate pressure with your fingertip. You should feel a mild sensation, without sharp pain. Hold the pressure for one to two minutes on each side. You can repeat this self-massage two to three times a day, or as needed, taking a break if the area becomes tender.
Other uses
Acupuncture
Depth : 0.3-0.5 cun
Needling of this point by a qualified practitioner is performed with the needle inserted 0.3 to 0.5 cun deep. The practitioner must be very careful regarding the angle and depth to avoid any risk of pneumothorax, given the proximity of the lungs.
Moxibustion
A practitioner may apply moxibustion using 3 to 5 cones to warm and stimulate this point. This must be carried out with caution by a professional to ensure patient safety and prevent burns.
This point is very superficial, so care is needed during stimulation. It regulates Lung Qi.
Effects in traditional Chinese energetics (TCM)
This point benefits the throat and helps descend 'rebellious' Qi (vital energy that rises inappropriately and causes cough or asthma).
Contraindications
As a precaution, avoid stimulating this point if you have a local skin infection or an open wound in the area.
