    In brief

This point is useful for easing coughs and feelings of discomfort or pain in the chest. It may help make breathing more comfortable and relieve chest tension.

    Where to find it

lateral to CV19, in the 1st intercostal space.

    How to stimulate it (acupressure)

To stimulate this point, place your index and middle fingers about three finger-widths on either side of the midline of your chest, at the level of the first intercostal space. Apply firm but gentle pressure, holding it for one to two minutes. You should feel light pressure, sometimes with a slight numbing sensation, but never sharp pain. Repeat this self-massage two to three times a day, or whenever needed.

    For practitioners

    Other uses

    Acupuncture

    Depth : 0.3-0.5 cun

The practitioner may perform an oblique puncture of this point to a depth of 0.3 to 0.5 cun. This procedure requires precise anatomical knowledge to avoid any risk of pneumothorax.

    Moxibustion

Moxibustion, applied by the practitioner with 3 to 5 cones, may be used to warm and stimulate this point. The technique must be performed with caution to avoid burns and the risks of pneumothorax associated with the area.

This point is located superficially and requires particular care during stimulation.

Effects in traditional Chinese energetics (TCM)

This point benefits the throat (relieves throat irritation) and directs rebellious Qi (vital energy) downward (calms disordered upward surges of energy, such as coughing). It regulates Lung Qi (vital energy) (helps support balance and proper function of the respiratory tract).
