    Zhejin — Flank Muscle

    In brief

The Flank Muscle point (VB23) is useful for relieving tension and pain along the sides of the chest, around the ribs. It may also offer comfort during respiratory discomfort, such as coughing or a feeling of difficulty breathing.

    Where to find it

forward of VB22, in the 4th intercostal space.

    How to stimulate it (acupressure)

Apply moderate pressure with the tip of your thumb or index finger. Make small circular movements or hold steady pressure for 1 to 2 minutes. The sensation should be comfortable, perhaps slightly dull, but never painful. This self-massage is recommended 2 to 3 times a day, or whenever the need arises, while breathing calmly.

    For practitioners

    Other uses

    Acupuncture

    Depth : 0.3-0.5 cun

The acupuncturist can insert a needle to a depth of 0.3 to 0.5 cun, using an oblique insertion. This procedure, performed by a professional, aims to regulate the energy of the Gallbladder and relieve thoracic pain.

    Moxibustion

Moxibustion can be applied to this point, generally using 3 to 5 small moxa cones. This technique, performed by a practitioner, helps to warm the area and promote the circulation of energy, particularly in cases of cold sensation or stagnation.

This point is known for promoting the flow of energy along the ribs and helping relax the diaphragm. It helps relieve energy blockages in the thoracic region and flanks.

Effects in traditional Chinese energetics (TCM)

This point works by regulating the Qi (vital energy) of the Gallbladder and promoting the flow of Qi (vital energy) in the rib region. It also helps open the chest and harmonize respiratory functions.
