Tiantu — Celestial Hill
In brief
This point is very effective for soothing the throat and easing breathing. It is particularly useful for coughs, hoarseness, or a feeling of discomfort in the throat.
Where to find it
Center of sternal notch (suprasternal hollow)
How to stimulate it (acupressure)
To stimulate this point, apply gentle to moderate pressure with a fingertip in the small hollow just above the sternum. Use gentle circular movements or sustained pressure for 1 to 2 minutes. The sensation should be comfortable; light pressure is sufficient, and sharp pain should be avoided. You can repeat this self-massage 2 to 3 times a day, or whenever needed, always keeping it comfortable.
Other uses
Acupuncture
Depth : 0.3-0.5 cun
Needling can be performed by a qualified practitioner, perpendicularly for 0.3 to 0.5 cun, then obliquely downwards behind the sternum for 0.5 to 1 cun. Great caution is required to avoid the trachea and underlying vital structures.
Moxibustion
Moxibustion may be applied to this point by a practitioner. It helps to warm and circulate energy in the area, relieving throat and lung conditions.
This point, known as 'Celestial Hill', is a major point for ear, nose, throat, and respiratory conditions. It is also a Window of Heaven point, with an influence on mental clarity.
Effects in traditional Chinese energetics (TCM)
Benefits the throat, directs rebellious Qi (vital energy) downward, dispels phlegm (liquid or semi-liquid accumulations), and is a Window of Heaven point (acts on the head and senses, helping to clarify the mind and perceptions).
Contraindications
It is essential to avoid any excessive pressure or inappropriate technique in this area because of its proximity to the trachea.
