Gaohuangshu — Hearth of the Vital Centers

    In brief

This point is often used to help with chronic fatigue, insomnia, persistent cough, or asthma. It is also known for supporting the body in cases of weight loss.

    Where to find it

    lateral to T4

    How to stimulate it (acupressure)

To stimulate this point, locate it on the back, approximately four finger-widths on either side of the spine, at the level of the fourth thoracic vertebra (between the shoulder blades). It is easier to ask someone to help you. Apply gentle to moderate pressure with the tip of your thumb or index finger. Hold the pressure for 1 to 2 minutes. The sensation should be comfortable, perhaps with slight heaviness or numbness, but never sharp pain. You can repeat this self-massage 1 to 2 times a day, particularly before bedtime if you have insomnia.

    Depth : 0.5-1 cun oblique

The acupuncturist will insert fine needles to a depth of 0.5 to 1 cun, using an oblique insertion. This procedure is performed exclusively by a qualified practitioner.

    Moxibustion

Moxibustion consists of heating the point using an incandescent mugwort stick. This highly tonifying technique is frequently used on this point by practitioners for its beneficial effects. It must be performed by a professional experienced in traditional Chinese medicine to avoid any risk of burns.

This point is traditionally considered very important for tonifying the body as a whole.

Effects in traditional Chinese energetics (TCM)

This point is traditionally used to regulate the Qi (vital energy) of the Heart (the heart organ and its emotional functions) and calm the mind (thoughts and emotions). It is also known for tonifying all Deficiencies (states of weakness or energy deficiency) in the body, making it a major point for supporting vital functions.
