Point Great Luo of the Spleen

    Dabao — Great Enveloping

    In brief

This point may be helpful if you experience chest discomfort or pain, particularly between the ribs, or if you are prone to coughing and asthma. It helps ease these unpleasant sensations.

    Where to find it

farther from the torso than midline of the body, at the level of the 1st space between ribs.

    How to stimulate it (acupressure)

To stimulate this point, locate it four finger-widths from either side of your sternum, at the level of the first intercostal space. Use the pad of your finger to apply moderate pressure, as though gently pressing inward. Maintain this pressure for one to two minutes on each side, making small circular movements or gently pressing and releasing. You should feel a mild sensation of pressure or numbness. Never massage if you feel sharp pain. You can repeat this self-massage two to three times a day.

    Other uses

    Moxibustion

Moxibustion, which consists of heating the point using a glowing mugwort stick, can be applied to this point by a qualified practitioner. Generally, application is done with 3 to 5 moxa cones, under the constant supervision of the practitioner to avoid any risk of burning.

This point is considered to have a major influence on the body's Qi (vital energy) and Blood, making it an important point for overall regulation.

Effects in traditional Chinese energetics (TCM)

This point is the Great Luo (a major secondary energy pathway) of the Spleen (the system of digestion and transformation), giving it an important influence on Qi (vital energy) and Blood (the body's nourishing fluids).
