    Taiyang — Great Yang

    In brief

This point is very useful for relieving headaches on the sides of the head, as well as migraines. It may also offer comfort for pain around the eyes or in the teeth.

    Where to find it

On the temple, in the hollow located approximately posterior to the midpoint of the line connecting the lateral end of the eyebrow and the outer canthus of the eye.

    How to stimulate it (acupressure)

To stimulate this point, find the depression at your temple, just beyond the lateral end of your eyebrow. Apply gentle to moderate pressure with your fingertip, using small circular movements or steady pressure. Maintain this stimulation for 1 to 2 minutes. The sensation should be comfortable pressure, possibly with slight numbness, but never sharp pain. You can repeat this stimulation 2 to 3 times a day, or whenever needed.

    Other uses

    Acupuncture

    Depth : 0,5 à 0,6 cun

The acupuncturist can insert a needle perpendicularly into the temporal muscle, or obliquely towards the back, or transversely (subcutaneously) in the direction of the VB-8 point. This procedure is performed by a qualified practitioner.

    Bloodletting

This point can be stimulated by small-scale bloodletting to drain excess Heat, a technique reserved for qualified professionals of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

It is one of the most important and frequently used extra-meridian points in clinical practice, particularly for headaches.

Effects in traditional Chinese energetics (TCM)

This extra point is traditionally known for expelling Wind (dispelling external pathogenic influences), dispersing Heat (reducing sensations of heat or inflammation), reducing swelling (decreasing local swelling), opening the meridian (improving the flow of energy along its pathway), and relieving pain.

    Contraindications

This point is known to bleed readily when needled. A practitioner may intentionally induce this slight bleeding for therapeutic purposes. If you are taking anticoagulant medication or have a bleeding disorder, it is essential to inform your practitioner.
