Qimai — Pulsating Vessel
In brief
This point is useful for easing ear-related discomfort, such as buzzing or ringing in the ears (tinnitus) and difficulty hearing (deafness), as well as soothing headaches and spinning sensations (vertigo). It supports greater ear comfort and a clearer mind.
Where to find it
At the center of the mastoid bone, level with the middle of the helix.
How to stimulate it (acupressure)
To stimulate this point, apply gentle to moderate pressure with the tip of your index or middle finger. You will find it at the centre of the bony prominence behind the ear (the mastoid process), level with the midpoint of the upper rim of your ear (the helix). Use small circular movements or steady pressure for one to two minutes. The sensation should be mild and should never cause sharp pain. Repeat this self-massage two to three times a day, or whenever you feel the need.
Other uses
Acupuncture
Depth : 0.3-0.5 cun
The acupuncturist can stimulate this point by inserting a fine needle 0.3 to 0.5 cun deep, perpendicularly to the skin. This procedure, performed by a professional, aims to act deeply on the energetic balance.
Moxibustion
Moxibustion, practiced by a therapist, consists of applying heat using an mugwort stick (moxa) over the point area, or small moxa cones on the skin. This can help to warm and circulate local energy, generally for three applications (three cones).
This point is specifically recognised for its benefits for ear conditions and its ability to soothe headaches.
Effects in traditional Chinese energetics (TCM)
This point benefits the ears (eases hearing-related discomfort) and dispels Wind (calms involuntary movements, migrating pain and disturbances associated with changes in weather).
