    Understanding Traditional Chinese Medicine

    What makes Chinese medicine special?

    +

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is based on a holistic view of the body: it does not treat an isolated symptom, but seeks to understand the underlying imbalance causing that symptom. Where Western medicine often targets a specific area, TCM considers that everything is connected — your digestion, your sleep, your emotions, your physical energy.

It builds on concepts such as Qi (vital energy), Yin and Yang (balance between opposing forces), and meridians (energy channels of the body). The goal: restore harmony so the body can regain its natural ability to self-regulate.

    How does Chinese medicine work?

    +

TCM acts on several levels simultaneously: physical, energetic, and emotional. The techniques used — massage, acupuncture, cupping, moxibustion — aim to:

    • Revitalize the circulation of Qi in the meridians to remove energy blockages
    • Rebalance Yin and Yang to restore the body's overall harmony
    • Stimulate self-healing capacities by strengthening weakened organs
    • Release physical and emotional tensions stored in the body

Each treatment is adapted to your current situation, because the same symptom (back pain, fatigue, stress) can have different causes depending on the person.

    Available Treatments

What's the difference between Tui Na and Deep Tissue?

    +

Both are deep massages, but with different approaches:

Tui Na is traditional Chinese therapeutic massage. It combines deep pressure, kneading, joint mobilizations, and stimulation of acupressure points. It acts on muscles, joints, and energy meridians. Ideal if you're looking for a holistic treatment that addresses both physical tension and energetic imbalances.

Deep Tissue is a Western massage targeting deep muscle layers. It uses sustained, slow pressure to release chronic tension, break down fascial adhesions, and improve mobility. Ideal if you have very localized muscle knots or persistent muscle pain.

In practice, I often combine both approaches according to your current needs.

Which treatment should I choose for my problem?

    +

Here are some guidelines, but during the first appointment, we will establish a diagnosis together to choose the most suitable treatment:

    • Muscle and joint pain → Tui Na or Deep Tissue Massage
    • Stress, anxiety, burnout → Relaxing / Anti-Stress Massage
    • Digestive issues, bloating, abdominal tension → Chi Nei Tsang
    • Heavy legs, water retention, circulation → Anti-Heavy Legs Treatment
    • Chronic conditions, energy imbalance → Acupuncture or Tailored TCM
    • Cellulite, body contouring → Palpate-roll / Slimming Massage

If you are unsure, Tailored TCM is often the best starting point: it allows for exploring different techniques and identifying those that resonate best with your body.

經絡 (Jīngluò) + No. (for example, "Rein Trois — Kidney 3")

    Do the treatments hurt?

    +

It depends on the treatment and your sensitivity threshold. Some techniques may be uncomfortable at the time, but they should never be unbearable.

Therapeutic massages (Tui Na, Deep Tissue): deep pressures can create a sensation of discomfort in very tense areas, but it's a "good pain" — one that brings release. I always adapt to your feelings and adjust the intensity in real-time.

Acupuncture: most people feel nothing or a slight insect bite sensation. Sometimes, a point can cause a tingling or heavy sensation — this is a good sign, it means the point is responding.

Cupping: sensation of suction and tugging, but no pain. Some people find it very pleasant.

The essential thing: you always remain in control. If something is too intense, tell me immediately, and I will adjust.

    Session Flow

What happens during the first appointment?

    +

The first session lasts approximately 1h15 (instead of 1h) to allow time to get acquainted and establish a comprehensive assessment.

    1. Initial Assessment (15-20 min): We discuss your reason for consultation, your history, your lifestyle, your sleep, your digestion, and your energy level. In Chinese medicine, everything is connected — even details that may seem unrelated to your main problem are valuable for understanding your imbalance.

    2. Energetic Diagnosis: observation of the tongue, taking Chinese pulses (6 pulses per wrist, each corresponding to an organ), palpation of key areas.

    3. Adapted Treatment (45-50 min): Based on the assessment, I choose the most appropriate techniques — massage, acupuncture, cupping, moxibustion, or a combination of several.

    4. Personalized Advice: At the end of the session, I provide tailored recommendations (self-massage, diet, postures, etc.) to extend the benefits.

What happens during a standard session (after the first one)?

    +

Subsequent sessions last 1 hour (or 1h30 depending on your choice). They always begin with a brief assessment to adapt the treatment to your current state — in Chinese medicine, the exact same protocol is never repeated, as your body evolves between each session.

The treatment itself takes up the majority of the time (50-55 min for a 1-hour session). At the end, I give you feedback on what I observed and advice if necessary.

What should I plan before and after a session?

    +

    Before the session:

    • Avoid eating a heavy meal just before (1h30-2h interval ideal)
    • Wear comfortable, loose clothing
    • If possible, avoid coffee 2-3 hours before (it can mask certain energetic signals)

    After the session:

    • Hydrate well to help the body eliminate mobilized toxins
    • Take it easy: avoid intense physical exertion or stress in the hours that follow
    • Observe your reactions: sleep, digestion, energy level, pain — all of this interests me to adjust subsequent sessions

Why might my condition temporarily worsen after a session?

    +

This is called an adjustment reaction or healing crisis, and it's actually a good sign.

When a treatment releases an energetic blockage or deep tension, the body reacts. For 24-48 hours, you may experience: unusual fatigue, muscle aches, slight worsening of symptoms, surfacing emotions, disturbed sleep. This is a sign that the body is actively working to rebalance itself.

Why does it happen? Your body was in "compensation" mode - it had grown accustomed to functioning with the imbalance. When that blockage is cleared, it must relearn how to function normally, and this transition can be uncomfortable.

What to do? Rest, drink plenty of water, and let it pass. Generally, everything returns to normal within 48 hours, and you then feel a significant improvement. If symptoms persist beyond 3 days, contact me.

    Effectiveness and Follow-up

How many sessions are needed to see results?

    +

This depends on your issue, its duration, and your energetic constitution. Here are some guidelines:

Acute problem (recent pain, temporary stress): 1 to 3 sessions are often sufficient. You usually feel an improvement from the first session.

Chronic problem (present for several months/years): plan for 5 to 10 sessions. The body needs time to undo long-standing patterns. The first sessions clear superficial blockages, subsequent ones address the deep causes.

Preventive maintenance: one session per month or every 2 months helps maintain balance and prevent new imbalances from setting in.

During the first appointment, I will give you a more precise estimate based on your situation. The goal is never to keep you indefinitely — my job is to empower you.

    How often should I come?

    +

Treatment phase (acute or chronic problem): 1 session per week or every 10-15 days initially, to create a dynamic of change. Once improvement is established, sessions are gradually spaced out.

Preventive maintenance: 1 session per month or every 2 months is sufficient to maintain balance.

Everyone is different. Some require close follow-up, others respond very well to spaced-out sessions. I will guide you based on your reactions.

    Contraindications and Precautions

Are there any contraindications to Chinese medicine treatments?

    +

Yes, certain situations require precautions or temporarily prevent certain treatments:

    Absolute contraindications (treatments impossible):

    • Fever, ongoing acute infection
    • Phlebitis, deep vein thrombosis
    • Active phase cancer (unless medically advised)
    • Severe coagulation disorders (for acupuncture and cupping)

    Relative contraindications (require adaptation):

    • Pregnancy: certain acupuncture points and massage areas should be avoided
    • Pacemaker, implanted medical equipment: to be reported before treatment
    • Anticoagulant treatment: increased vigilance with acupuncture and cupping
    • Significant varicose veins, severe circulatory problems: adaptation of massage

If in doubt, report any particular medical condition during the initial assessment. If necessary, I will ask for your treating physician's agreement.

Can I come if I am on medical treatment?

    +

Yes, in the vast majority of cases. Chinese medicine is complementary to Western medicine; it does not replace it.

If you are undergoing medical treatment, continue it normally. TCM treatments can support your body, reduce certain side effects, and improve your overall well-being, without interfering with your treatment.

Simply inform me of your treatments during the initial assessment, especially if you are taking anticoagulants (vigilance required with acupuncture and cupping).
